History and meaning
The Sary-Jaz Valley remained a remote, high-altitude area for centuries. During the Soviet era, the area was explored by geologists and mountaineers, and the village of Enilchek developed around mining projects. After these projects were scaled back, some of the infrastructure was abandoned.
The region remains significant for mountaineering and scientific interest thanks to the South Engilchek Glacier and the highest peaks of the Tien Shan. The fragility of high-mountain ecosystems and its border status require particularly careful planning.
