History and meaning
The square's complex was formed during the Soviet period. According to the Bishkek mayor's office, the square was built in 1984 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Kyrgyz SSR. After independence, the area was renamed Ala-Too and became the central square of the Kyrgyz Republic.
In 2024, a major reconstruction was completed: the pavement and fountains were updated, lighting and accessibility were improved, and a new flagpole was installed. At the same time, the square retained its role as a connecting space between the State Historical Museum, city parks, and the city center's main pedestrian areas.
